Occidental College |
Occidental College is a liberal arts college located in the Eagle Rock section of Los Angeles. It is the oldest liberal arts school in L.A, and only one of a handful nationwide located in a major metropolitan city. It was established in 1887 and they currently compete in 21 NCAA varsity sports. |
Mission Statement
The Occidental College Department of Athletics seeks to advance the College's mission of excellence, equity, community and service by providing amateur athletic programs which emphasize competitive intercollegiate teams, fair play, participation in intramural and club sports, and health and fitness programs for all members of the Occidental College community. The character of the athletics program reflects the priorities of academic success, health, fitness, teamwork, and a winning spirit as critical factors in a well-rounded liberal arts education, consistent with the Occidental College mission. Occidental's athletic program aims to compare favorably with those at the best small liberal arts colleges in the nation.

Taylor PoolTaylor Pool was built in 1930 and named for Mary Barbara Taylor '29 and her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hartley Taylor. It is home to the men’s and women’s swimming and water polo teams. It is the oldest active competitive water polo site in the United States. The facility has been hosting Oxy home games since it was opened in 1930. |
Rush GymnasiumRush Gymnasium was constructed in 1965, and it now hosts the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. It is named for Frank "Speedy" Rush, a track star from the class of 1909, who was also a long-time trustee. During the 2009-10 men’s basketball season the Tigers hosted Southern Methodist University marking the first time a Division I school played against an Occidental College team at home.

Bell Softball FieldBell Field was renovated and enlarged in 2003 when dugouts were added and the field was redesigned. The home of the Occidental softball program also serves as the site for many recreational teams during the fall.

Patterson Field was originally constructed in 1916, making it the oldest college football stadium in the city of Los Angeles. In 1982, the stands were reconstructed to be able to seat its current capacity of 4,000 fans. In 2005, the first of a series of FieldTurf changes were installed, replacing the natural grass that lined the field. Patterson Field has been home to the Tigers’ football program since 1916 and now also serves as the home for all field sports.
