November 11, 2015 -- On this Wednesday, Occidental College was the site of the CIF Division V semifinals for girls' tennis. CIF is the California Interscholastic Federation, and they are basically the governing body that oversees, regulates, and archives all of the high school athletic competitions in the state. The semifinal match was between Maranatha HS and Magnolia HS, with Magnolia taking the victory to move on to the finals. I was assigned by Katie Grogan, previously mentioned in another post, to be one of the overseers of this contest. Prior to the contest, the remaining people on the court had to be cleared out and then I helped set up the facility for the semifinal matches. The court was manicured, the bleachers were cleaned and set up for the viewers, and I was available for the coaches for any questions or concerns. I like the fact that I can take a peek into the behind the scenes activity of all of the different sports. I stayed for the matches and found it interesting to be on the other side of the lines, and not in the competition of the game itself. It really is fascinating to look at all the different perspectives and competing interests that are present in just one athletic contest.
