October 24, 2015 -- This week, I was able to take my first peek into the NCAA recruiting process. Occidental College is a Division III school, and as of today, there are 450 schools total in the division. As one can imagine, recruiting itself is a challenge, but add on a few more variables and it makes the process even tougher. To start, a school in Division III will not get as much prestige as higher divisions. Next, certain schools are known for certain sports, so they will already have a leg up on other institutions. Also, the budget contstraints that schools have to encounter will certainly put a damper on the recruiting process. These are just some of the bigger factors, and they contribute to just how difficult it can be to be competitive at the NCAA level, regardless of division. The head of recruiting at Oxy, David Foley, is also the high jump coach for the track team. His plan was to send out the initial recruiting letters to over 14,000 track athletes nationwide. I had to keep in mind that this was just for the track team, and it will be good to observe the other sports as well.
