October 31, 2015 -- This week, I had the chance to sit and speak with the women's basketball coach, Anahit Aladzhanyan. She is entering her fourth season as head coach, and she is also the senior woman administrator and budget manager of the athletic department. With these positions at the athletic department, she can see firsthand the process of NCAA budget allocation and the direct effect it can have on a university's athletic program. During the summer, we were able to take SRM 534 (Business Strategies in Sport) and learned how the NCAA budget is allocated. Most of the money allocated to all the divisions in NCAA sports are derived from the NCAA's contract with CBS for broadcasting the Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. In 2010, the contract was extended another 14 years for an amount just over $11 billion. Naturally, Division I sees the bulk of this and then the rest is trickled down to the other divisions. She spoke about some of the obstacles in the budget process, much of which comes from women's sports taking a backseat to men's sports. Later that week (11/3), Coach Aladzhanyan almost beat a Division I school, UC Irvine, by taking them to overtime on the road, so kudos to her team for their efforts.
