October 17, 2015 -- Saturday night, and in the college football world, that means it's gameday! In the last post, I mentioned the fact that it is Homecoming Week here at Occidental College. Six of the varsity teams would be competing, so the athletic department had their hands full this week. I was asked to help with the football game, and today, I worked under the supervision of Katie Grogan, the Director of Operations at the Athletic Department. I was assigned to work the will-call booth for the visiting Chapman University Panthers. I was given a list of names, and on this list were the names of the visiting players and their designated guests. Football team members are allowed to have up to four guests, and if one is not on this list, then they must purchase regular game tickets. I worked the booth and was able to watch some of the football game when work slowed down. Again, another eye opening night, to be able to see more of the behind the scenes activity of an NCAA event. It was a good way to end the week, and I definitely learned some more things tonight.
October 16, 2015 -- This week is Homecoming Week at Occidental College, so the campus has been buzzing with activity and anticipation. There are going to be 6 varsity sports with contests this weekend, so the athletic department has some more prepping to do for the weekend. Today, I assisted the football team again with their preparations. I finished the proofreading and editing for the game program, and even had contact with the printing department at the university. I walked the final revision and copy to the printing department across campus, and so was able to get more familiar with the layout of the school. That was the final step before they were to be bulk printed and off the presses for game use. Again, something as small as the game programs was something I overlooked before, but it is all part of the multi-layered process of carrying out an NCAA athletic event.
October 14, 2015 -- This week, Occidental College plays host to Chapman University for a conference football game. Occidental College plays in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), and going into Saturday's game, the team sits with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses. Of course, a lot of work and preparation must go into the process of carrying out the game itself. Even though this is the case, I was very unaware about some of the actual bare bones details that go into hosting and carrying out an NCAA athletic contest. On this day, I was to proofread and verify all of the information on the football program. These programs will be used for Saturday's football game, so accuracy is at a premium. I was able to proofread and update the program, and I even discovered 3 mistakes to change. I never put thought into it, but something as small as the event program is still a piece of the pie that is an NCAA sanctioned varsity sports contest.
October 9, 2015 -- First day at Occidental College, and the normal first day jitters were present. Before I started, I was interviewed and was able to meet my mentor and some of the athletic department staff. Everyone was so nice, and I could not help but feel the family atmosphere in the department, which certainly helped ease my transition into the first day. My mentor, Mike Wells, is the Assistant Athletic Director and also an Assistant Coach on the basketball team. He introduced me to the Head Coach, Brian Newhall, who was a former student-athlete at Oxy, and is a member of the school's Hall of Fame. I have a background in basketball, but for this mentorship, I would like to provide assistance and learn about all of the varsity sports. This will help me gain a better understanding of the whole process in all the sports.
