April 13, 2016 -- I wanted to address the topic about communication during this mentorship. One of the questions and points asks us to describe the communication and overall interaction with our mentors. My mentor, Mike Wells, is one of the Assistant AD's and he is also an Assistant Coach for the Men's Basketball team. I started my mentorship way before this session started, just before the basketball season began actually. I knew that as the season progressed, the communication with my mentor would lessen and fluctuate at the same time. Every day that I arrived in the athletic department, I would check in with him if he was available. There were days that he was not in his office, because he was on road trips, conducting practice, or one of the other myriad of reasons for someone in his position. Even with these factors, he managed to give me assignments that helped my growth and knowledge about the sports administration process, and about how Occidental College themselves runs things. In the beginning, one of the talks we had was with how I wanted to see how the whole department ran and also how I wanted to be exposed to more than just basketball. He certainly allowed me to do both of these things and I am very thankful for that. Overall, considering that I began my mentorship just before basketball season began, I would give ourselves an 8 or 8 1/2 out of 10.
